Is my guinea pig really a pig?
No. The term pig was given to describe the grunting sounds that
a guinea pig makes when it communicates. The guinea comes from
the country New Guinea where the animal was first discovered.
It is actually a member of the rodent family and is one of the
most gentle of all domesticated small animals.
What are some healthy guinea pig foods?
Guinea pig pellets are loaded with the one thing your guinea
pig needs most - Vitamin C. Throw in a little fresh fruit and
vegetables once a day (but not too much or they will make your
pet sick), at least 6 oz. of water and a salt spool, and your
furry pal will think it is in guinea pig heaven.
Can my guinea pig be housebroken like
my pet rabbit?
No. Guinea pigs cannot be housebroken successfully. You will
notice that your guinea pig will select one corner of its cage
to use the bathroom, however don't count on this behavior when
it's outside of its cage. Remember, a lot of health problems stem
from unsanitary conditions. You should clean and santize the entire
cage at least once a week.
Does my guinea pig need exercise?
Guinea pigs require small amounts of daily exercise. Jumbo wheels
and exercise balls are available. Your guinea pig will spend the
bulk of its day eating, chewing and sleeping.
What kind of cage should a guinea pig
live in? What about bedding?
Guinea pigs can live in a cage made of metal, hard plastic or
glass. A solid floor is essential - wire floors hurt their feet!
Allow for at least 2 square feet of living space per guinea pig.
The best bedding is recycled newspaper products.
